5th Grade Integration

Recently, I have been invited into several 5th grade classroom to give the students instruction on Google documents. This will help the students have access to their documents/presentations from any computer. It will also let 5th graders collaborate in real time regardless of where they are. The 5th graders have been so enthused to use the new technology. It is so much fun to see their faces light up when they realize they can see another type on their document even if the person is across the room or not even at school. They love how they don't have to save, and collaboration is instant. I look forward to seeing some of the projects that will be produced due to their use of Google documents.

First Semester Comes to an End

As first semester comes to an end, I have a sense of pride for our school district. So many wonderful things are happening all around the district. Students are engaging in meaningful practices. They are using technology to enhance these meaningful practices. I have seen students creating short stories using Google drawing, Presentations of Learning are using Powerpoint as well as Google Presentation. Some Elementary students are using Kids Blog to respond to teachers using their writing/typing skills. iPads are being used by many departments to enhance instruction. Google accounts are being used in highly effective ways to increase communication among staff and students. I am sure I could go on and on about all the wonderful uses of technology but if you'd like to comment on some more ways, feel free to comment and share how you are enhancing your curriculum here at MCSD.

I have heard a few complaints that Google Presentation just doesn't have enough features. Well, you now have access to SlideRocket. SlideRocket is a site where you can create a presentation using its features. I believe you will be impressed with all of its features and animations. Please feel free to use it. All you have to do is sign into your Google account and it is available to you under the more tab. Some features include cool transitions, audio, video, plug-ins, and many other features. Have Fun!

Professional Developments have moved in New Direction

Our previous Professional Developments have been more geared towards the Technology Department direct teaching concepts with the new Mac Books and Google Accounts. As a department we felt the teachers needed some hands on time to take what they've learned in previous PD and put it to practice. So, our next three Professional Developments will include teachers using Google accounts to create an outline, spreadsheets, and a final presentation about a theme or concept they teach. I hope all teachers enjoy the projects.

ITEC conference

The Tech Department and several teachers from the MCSD attended the Iowa Technology Education Conference in DesMoines. I learned that Muscatine is on the cutting edge, we were more advanced with technology than many of the school districts in Iowa. I felt proud to be from Muscatine in all of the sessions I attended. Google apps, Picasa Web, Photo shop Elements, Blogger, were all featured discussions in the sessions and we were using all of these internet and software programs in our classrooms already. I will hope to expand the use of these programs in more classrooms around the district. If you'd like more information on one of these don't be afraid to ask your helpful tech department.

Google Calendar Training

Google calendar training took place this week, just wondering if teachers and administrations would like to share how they are see using google calendars. I believe we learn from each other, so if we share effective ways to use google calendars, we may stimulate more uses for all.
Some ways I'm using google calendars is posting my calendar on my website so teachers are able to see if I'm available to help them with their instruction. I've linked my calendar to my phone so I get reminders of all appointments which makes me very organized and well prepared for each appointment. I especially like the option of attachments so I can link a document to an event, I can see this as a very effective way to keep parents informed on assignments for students.

MHS Integrating Technology

MHS is rolling out new Macbooks to all teachers, and training staff and students on the uses of Google App Accounts. I look forward to all the uses staff and students will find and incorporate into student learning. I will be featuring ways the staff are incorporating the technology into their classrooms and affecting student achievement.
